The Basics: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express Review

Card provider: American Express
Cash back system:

  • 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%)
  • 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%)
  • Plus, 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%)
  • 1% cash back on general purchases

How the cash back system works

The main feature of the American Express Blue Cash Everyday rewards card is that depending on how much you spend in each category, you’re going to get a percentage of that back that you can put towards your next bill.

Let’s dive into each category for a closer look.

3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases (on up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%)

Every time you purchase items at a U.S. supermarket—everything from the essentials like bread and eggs to those indulgent little cookies—Amex will give you 3% cash back on your total purchase (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, after that 1%).

So, by going grocery shopping tonight and spending $50 on groceries, you’ll earn a total of 1.5 Rewards Dollars. And of course, the Rewards Dollars pile up the more you spend. So if you’re feeding a big family and spending $200 a week, you’re going to earn your Rewards Dollars quicker. By the way, $200 a week is $6 reward dollars for purchases you were already going to make. Nice!

Some eligible U.S. supermarkets that earn cash back with the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express include:

  • ALDI
  • FreshDirect
  • Gelson’s
  • Hy-Vee
  • Kings Food Markets
  • Meijer
  • ShopRite
  • Smart & Final
  • Stop & Shop
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Vons
  • Whole Foods
  • Winn-Dixie

Note that this is not a complete list.

Merchants, where you WILL NOT earn 3% on your purchases, include convenience stores, specialty stores (like bakeries, wine shops, or fish markets), superstores (like Target and Walmart), meal-kit delivery services, and warehouse clubs (like BJ’s Club). The supermarket must also be in the U.S. You can find more info on the American Express website.

3% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases (on up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%)

Just about every household spends money on gas. Whether you’re commuting or driving kids around town, all that gas adds up. So with your Blue Cash Everyday card from American Express, you can take advantage of this essential spending by earning cash back.

American Express has approved the following gas stations (this is not a complete list):

  • Gulf
  • Murphy USA
  • Murphy Express
  • Exxon
  • Mobil
  • Hess
  • Shell

It’s important to note here that you will not earn 3% cash back if the gas station is also part of a supermarket or warehouse club, though there may be some exceptions. Additionally, additional rewards are not earned on the marina or other types of commercial fuel.

3% cash back on U.S. online retail stores (up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%)

Now, this is a great feature! After the initial onset of the pandemic, many folks started using online retailers to make purchases safely. For this benefit, purchases must be made online via a website or through an app from U.S. retail merchants that sell directly to consumers.

A few examples of purchases that will earn additional rewards include, but are not limited to:

  • Major retailers (e.g., Amazon.com, Walmart.com)
  • Pet stores (e.g., Chewy.com)
  • Furniture stores (e.g., Wayfair.com)
  • Department stores
  • Drug Stores
  • Book stores
  • Auto & home supply stores
  • Personal and household care
  • Toy & Hobby stores
  • Computer & Electronic stores
  • Apparel, Footwear, and Accessories stores
  • Sporting goods stores

The following purchases are not considered retail purchases:

  • Restaurants, including food delivery platforms
  • Supermarkets, including online grocery orders
  • Gasoline stations
  • Automotive dealers
  • Travel, including airline tickets and rideshare services
  • Entertainment, including concert tickets and streaming services
  • Other services, including wireless cellular providers

Payment must be made online and categorized as an Internet transaction by the merchant for purchase to be eligible. Additionally, you will not receive additional rewards for purchases ordered online but paid for in-store.

All your purchases do have to be made in the U.S. to qualify.

Unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases

Last but not least, if the rest of your purchases don’t fall under the categories above, you can still earn cash back.

American Express will give you 1% cash back on all your other qualifying purchases.

For instance, if you’ve got to spend a little extra and buy a new $300 lawnmower at the store, that’s going to earn you an extra 3 Rewards Dollars you can put back towards your bill to pay for essentials like groceries and gas.

21 Reasons to Have the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express

The Math Behind the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express

In order to fully understand the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, it’s important to understand the number behind your cash rewards, Rewards Dollars, and welcome bonus. Here, we’re going to break it all down for you so it’s easy to understand the earning and redemption potential of the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. Let’s get started!

Numbers behind the Rewards Dollars: 3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases

That covers up to $6,000 in U.S. supermarket purchases, which totals 180 rewards dollars. That means after you spend $6,000 at a supermarket that year, you’ll start earning just 1% on those purchases.

For a household that spends around $100 a week on grocery store purchases, that’s not much of a problem because the $6,000 limit will take them about a year to hit. But for a family that’s spending more than that, like $200 a week on groceries, it’ll take less than a year before they’ve hit the limit and their grocery store purchases get knocked down to 1%.

3% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases

When you make purchases at U.S. gas stations, you’ll earn 3% cash back, up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%. So, if it costs $45 to fill up your tank every week, you will earn nearly 4 Rewards Dollars a month.

And if you’re commuting or schlepping kids back and forth all day and spending closer to $100 a week on gas, that means you’re going to be earning 8 Rewards Dollars every month. Pretty good!

3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases

When you make purchases at approved online U.S. retailers, you’ll get 3% cash back on up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1%. That’s great for those essential purchases.

1% cash back on other purchases

If the rest of your purchases don’t fall under the categories above, you can still earn cash back. American Express will give you 1% cash back on all your other qualifying purchases. So if you’re buying a computer this month for $1,500, you’re going to earn 15 Rewards Dollars. Pretty good for something you were going to buy anyway. You can use those rewards to pay for other essentials you’ll charge to the card, like groceries or gas.
